2020 India ( Great Hearts HS) — 1430
(720 verbal/710 math) Mr. Warren really helped me gain more confidence and improved math “flexibility” for this test.
2019 Peter — 1550
(750 verbal/800 math) Thank you so much! I improved 140 points over my previous PSAT score. You provided me with the toolbox, time and mindset I needed to succeed. Your expertise made this a productive class for me. Update: I am a National Merit Finalist. Thank you so much for everything.
2019 Caleb –1430
(670 Verbal 760 math). I wouldn’t have done this without your guidance, support and expertise. I really appreciated that you motivated everyone to do their best and took the time to figure out what each individual needed in order to improve.
2019 Grace
Last semester I took Mr.Warren’s SAT prep class and I struggled significantly; I really believed that I wouldn’t be able to raise my score, but Mr. Warren thought the exact opposite; even after everything was looking like it was going downhill, he for some reason had faith in my ability and kept pushing me to do my best. After that class I raised my score 160 points on the SAT. I never thought I could make so much progress.
2018 Caitlin (Churchhill HS) –1400
I got that 1400!! 740 reading/writing and 660 on math. I couldn’t have done it without you, thank you so much!!!
2018 Abigail -1390
(680 Verbal, 710 Math) Thank you so much. The class really pushed me academically and prepared me for the SAT. I walked out mentally faster and more flexible in my approach to problems. It definitely showed in my improved Math scores (additional 130 pts). This helped me get the 2nd highest scholarship at UNT and qualify me for admission to honors college. None of those opportunities would have been possible without the help from this course.
2017 Erin -1550
(verbal 800, Math 750)—-Thank you for all the hard work you put in to teaching the SAT class this year! I don’t think I would have gotten my math scores so high without your help. Thank you again for offering such a great SAT prep class!
Why should my child take this course?
Your child’s opportunities for college admissions and scholarships are based almost exclusively on their SAT or ACT scores. Although you will read and hear rhetoric about grades and other areas of special promise as being involved in the decision and scholarship process, these are actually only very small factors compared to the test scores. Those scores are the easiest way for colleges to objectively compare students from across the nation. A difference in 100 points is the difference between just admission and admission with a small scholarship and a difference of 200 points can completely change the perception of a student in the eyes of the admissions and scholarship offices. (please see my videos on test scores and college admissions).
What can I expect from the course?
The classes are designed to meet individual needs by answering specific questions requested by participants a day in advance. This course not only shares invaluable tips and methods but also runs on interaction with students. In turn, they will need to make the work in this short course a priority if they expect to see their scores improve. They will need to work through about 16-25 problems each night and even more importantly they will need to email me the ones they want me to cover in the next class.
This course is designed so that I can help the students improve as individuals so they can achieve their personal goals for admissions and scholarships. Their communication with me and buy-in to the process is critical for them to see success.
What will my child learn?
The SAT test is divided into two equal portions of verbal and mathematics sections. The verbal is subdivided into the reading section and the grammar section. The math portion of the test covers
Heart of Algebra—36% Statistics— 26%
Advanced mathematics— 27% Geometry and other topics—10%
Although we will do some reading comprehension, this course will focus primarily on math and grammar as those are the sections where your child can quickly raise his/her scores.
These exams will always test the same concepts but in very creative and novel formats that require students to think in ways they may not have thought in the past. As a result, I have found that the best way to improve scores is for students to do a lot of problems. They will NOT see these same problems on the actual exam but they will develop the mental flexibility and speed needed to think through the exam questions on test day by diligently working through these problems in the prep class.
We will also spend a short amount of time talking about how to interpret their scores and how to examine colleges to see if they are a good fit for them based on these scores.
In this course, we will spend the first half of the course working through problems and concepts and the 2nd half of the course taking practice tests.
Additional Help
Students can text or email specific questions where they are stuck and I will try and answer those before class.
